Make Your Own Picture Frame

Ever buy a frame at a big-box store only to realize it almost fits your art… but not quite? Or worse, it falls apart the second you hang it? In this two-session workshop, you’ll make a custom hardwood picture frame that’s built to last and actually fits what you want to show off.

Choose from beautiful wood species — White Oak, Roasted Ash, Maple, Ambrosia Maple, or Cherry — and build either one large 18" × 24" frame or two smaller 10" × 12" frames. Over two hands-on sessions (2–3 hours each), you’ll learn the fundamentals of frame-making, from cutting perfect mitres to strengthening them with splines.

All materials are included: hardwood, virgin acrylic glazing (goodbye, scratched plastic), hanging hardware, and backboard. Mat board is not included — you can choose and purchase one separately if you want to give your piece an extra pop based on the display piece and size..

Got a weird-sized print? Or a schedule that doesn’t quite fit? Drop us a line at info@torontocrafts.ca.  We’ll do our best to accommodate custom sizes or help you order a special frame if the class time doesn’t work for you.

What You Will Learn

  • Selecting Wood Species: What’s the vibe? Sturdy oak, warm cherry, or funky ambrosia maple?
  • Cutting & Mitred Corners: Because a 92° corner just doesn’t look right.
  • Adding Splines: A sneaky (and beautiful) way to make your frame stronger.
  • Assembly: Glue, clamp, and square it all up — no “leaning tower of picture frame” here.
  • Finishing & Fitting: Pop in the acrylic, backboard, and hanging hardware so it’s ready for the wall.

You’ll leave with either one (18" × 24") or two (10" × 12") completed frames, plus the knowledge (and bragging rights) to make more at home.
