What's on the workbench?

Turning Brick into Paint with Gizem Candan

In this workshop, you will learn how to transform plants into pigments and paint, with a focus on buckthorn berries. Over the course of 3 hours, the facilitator will demonstrate the complete paint-making process, from making lake pigments to paint, the binder and tools needed in the process and safety precautions.

Each participant will be given a paint sample to try on paper. This class is suitable for complete beginners.

What You’ll Learn

Participants will work through the complete watercolour-making process starting from making lake pigments, including:

  • Gathering Materials: Learn what plant and flowers to grow in your dye garden, or forage in the city.
  • Working with Invasive Plants: Learn to identify common buckthorn plants (Rhamnus cathartica), understand their ecological impacts in the local environment, and learn about proper disposal methods.
  • Lake Pigments: Learn how to process raw materials into fine pigments through grinding, levigating, and filtering.
  • Watercolour Binder: Learn about the recipe, the ratios, and how to prepare a watercolor binder.
  • Mulling:  Learn how to mix the binder with pigment using a glass muller and a glass slab.
  • Application: Enjoy testing the finished paint on watercolour paper to see how the colour comes to life.
