Spoon Carving Workshop

Ever tried carving a spoon only to end up with a splintered stick?
This class takes you deeper into the craft of hand carving —  just your hands, a block of wood, and sharp traditional tools. Over 3 hours, you’ll learn how to shape and hollow a spoon from start to finish.

Choose to use our studio tools or upgrade with your very own carving knife and hook knife to take home.

Course Objectives

  • Discover the essentials of carving functional spoons from spoon blanks.

  • Learn to safely and effectively use both a straight carving knife and a hook knife.

  • Practice hollowing out a spoon bowl and refining the handle.

  • Understand blade care and stropping for long-lasting sharpness.

  • Finish with a carved spoon you can continue refining and oiling at home.

What You Will Learn

Safe Knife Grip & Control – Work with confidence and precision for longer sessions.
Spoon-Specific Cuts – Master the push cut, pull cut, and stop cut for shaping.
Hollowing Techniques – Use a hook knife to safely carve the spoon bowl.
Finishing Methods – Sanding, smoothing, and oiling for a usable, beautiful spoon.
Tool Maintenance – Keep your knife and hook knife razor-sharp with stropping.

Project

Each participant will carve a wooden spoon from a prepared hardwood blank. You’ll leave with your own hand-carved spoon (plus the skills to make many more).
